It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Shirley Bevan of
2 Moel-y-mab Cottages, Leighton. Shirley had lived here in The Pentre for so many
years and we have been grateful for all her support towards many village causes. We
will all miss her greatly and send our best wishes and support to her son Tony, daughter
Caroline and her beloved granddaughter Cerys.

Thank you to Allan Lloyd who has skilfully cut the hedges of Leighton Village Hall
and we are very grateful for his support. We also thank Sarah & Haydyn Jones
who have done a stirling job clearing all of the brushings from the area.

The Collation of The Rev William K Rowell

as Rector of The Chirbury Group(which includes Leighton & Trelystan)

On 4th September Chirbury Church was full to the aisles of villagers, clergy, vergers and visitors

giving the anticipated service a warm and theatrical atmosphere.

The congregation was welcomed by the sound of Philip sending

those organ notes trilling up into the arches and mingling with the

bellringers chimes above. This was to be the inauguration of Bill

as our Rector and the gravity of the occasion was evident when the

service started with much pageantry and several processions of

clergy, officers and parishioners led by The Bishop in his golden

robes. Throughout the ceremony we had uplifting hymns entwined

around the important religious oaths, symbols and the induction.

In the middle of this was the sermon of the Suffregan Bishop of

Ludlow & Archdeacon of Ludlow, The Rt Rev Alistair Magowan

which was on the theme of love and in which he quoted Aretha

Franklin’s song lyrics including her anthem R.E.S.P.E.C.T. The

coordination of so many well rehearsed stages was impeccable

and even the slight hitch when Bill and the Bishop went into the

porch to ring the church bell to mark Bills possession of the

benefice when the rope snapped, if anything added to the enjoyment. Tony the Churchwarden then

legged it up to the belfry to produce a handbell for Bill to ring to much applause. The bell tolled, all

was well. After the service we had delicious food and to see so many people chatting and milling

around made it a memorable evening and thanks must go to Chirbury for hosting it all so well and to

everyone who took part. We had music, ministry and mysterious mandates with even the Bishop

quoting the Queen of Soul but most of all we had Bill whose kindness and good humour shone out in

the candlelight. The beginning of the next chapter...... JW
